Lines, Whines & Small Victories

For better or worse, I've worked diligently to keep this blog as clean and streamlined as possible.

This is a much bigger challenge than you might think. (I'd recount the details, but that could become one long, boring post. Let's skip ahead.)

The power of Blogger and many other blog hosting sites is simplicity and ease. Pick a template, modify it to suit your preferences and start posting.

Every hill has an upside and a downside, however. The downside to Blogger et al is you have to either live with certain undesired features or accept you might go crazy trying to fix them.

Take, for example, the lines and shadows Blogger automatically places around images. I solved that problem quite some time ago. Then Blogger central, in its infinite wisdom, made some universal coding changes, and suddenly any image with a caption acquired a partial drop shadow that looked something like this.

No, it's not a big deal. But on a site that works hard to be crisp and relatively uncluttered, fussy bits like drop shadows were superfluous. No matter what fix I tried, however, I couldn't get it to go away.

Today's small victory? I found a way to eliminate the shadow. Now let's see if that fix holds for awhile.

As with so many things in work, life and the webosphere, the right solution is often rather easy to implement – once you find it. And that's the real challenge.

(I won't bore you with the coding specifics. If you're interested in learning what worked, leave a note to that effect in the comments and I'll do a brief follow up.)
