SEO | How Findable Are You Online?

Many things have changed in the SEO and internet realm.

To test the real-world effects of these changes, Bob Chapman and I decided to run a quick, informal “findability” comparison.

Working in separate locations from our own office computers, we each searched for “Bob Chapman, Sandler” to see what results appeared. Bob used Yahoo, I used Google.

When we first did this experiment roughly two years ago, we found many Bobs, Roberts and Chapmans. None of the search engines, however, produced the correct Bob Chapman anywhere in the first five pages of search results.

The results this time were quite revealing.

Of the first 10 links Yahoo displayed, six were directly related:
2 links - Company website
2 links - B2B Write Now posts or articles featuring Bob Chapman
1 link - LinkedIn
1 link - Outdated company information

Google performed even better. Of the first 10 links displayed, nine were directly related:
2 links - Recent programs or program announcements
1 link - Company website
1 link - LinkedIn
1 link - Outdated company information

This exercise served as a useful reminder. Yes, different search engines produce different results, but quality content and a steady, businesslike presence radically improve online findability.

Perhaps it's time to ask: How findable are you online? The results may surprise you.
